Corliss’ Poems

Shingles

Corliss liked to keep things light and happy, but even she had her limits.
Shingles on houses
make everything neat
They keep out the rain
the snow and the sleet
Shingles on people
are a whole other thing
They itch and they throb
and they constantly sting
Avoid them!

The Obscene Phone Call

I RECEIVE AN OBSCENE PHONE CALL
RATHER FREQUENTLY,
THEY TEND TO BOTHER OTHER FOLK
BUT THEY’RE WELCOMED A LOT BY ME.
THERE’S PLENTY OF HEAVY BREATHING
COMBINED WITH A MOAN AND GROAN,
ALL THE ABOVE IS MAGNIFIED
WHEN IT’S TRANSMITTED BY MY PHONE.
I CHALLENGE! … “I KNOW YOU’RE THERE.
AND I KNOW JUST WHO YOU ARE!”
ALL TO NO AVAIL,
THERE’S NOT EVEN A “HA, [...]

The Club Photographer

Dear Mr. Kodak, I’m writing to you
For I have a problem that’s making me blue
In good faith I bought one of your instamatics
And tho’ I’m not prone to melodramatics
I find that your camera is driving me crazy
The flash bulb attachment is more or less lazy
It flashes the first time then misses the next
Then flashes, then [...]

Baby’s Been There (haven’t we all?)

Corliss could have had another career – famous Hallmark card creator!
Baby’s Been There
Wherever I look, both high and low
I know my baby’s been there
Whatever the toy that stubs my toe,
I know my baby’s been there
The little car in my candy dish,
the block, the book, the ball
it’s baby who distributes them
he is the cause of all
and [...]

Twilight

One of many lovely gentle poems by Corliss inspired by the natural world.
TWILIGHT
Have you ever strolled down
thru the wood,
As twilight comes a ‘creeping;
And on a lonely lakeside stood
To view the forest sleeping
And as you pause to listen,
For sounds that are not there;
You see the first star glisten
As a bird glides through the air

Pockets in Jeans

Corliss wrote poetry for family events, for a poetry circle she joined in the 1970s (or at least that’s what she said it was), and when the spirit moved her.  This was one of her favorites:
Pockets in Jeans
Pockets in jeans were meant to hold,
skate keys, rocks and rubber bands
treasures found in rubbish [...]

My first day at school

I went to school today.
And tho’ it was quite new
I found the kids were lots of fun
And I liked our teacher too!
At first I felt that I might cry
For I didn’t know a soul.
But soon the class bell rang, and then
Our teacher took the roll.
We each were given a desk
To call our very own.
Mine’s right [...]

My Anniversary Present

MY ANNIVERSARY PRESENT
ARRIVED A LITTLE LATE
THERE’S NO COMPLAINTS FROM ME
THIS ONE WAS WORTH THE WAIT.
WEIGHING EIGHT POUNDS PLUS,
BROWN HAIR AND SLATE BLUE EYES!
MY LITTLE GRANDSON, DAVID,
WAS THE VERY BEST SURPRISE.
